Sponsorship Program

Our Sponsorship Program allows our residents to have a special friend. $25 will sponsor a pony and $50 will sponsor a horse. For this monthly fee, “your” horse/pony lives here and you may bring treats, brush and groom, and visit with him/her. These horses enjoy their friends very much and look forward to seeing them.

This is Tony, enjoying quality time with his sponsor.

This program may be just the right thing for you and your family.

Banjo – now 25 years old, is a pretty POA Palomino gelding. He became foundered and his owner had to retire him here at the Refuge
-
Brighty – a darling 30 year old donkey, retired due to age and a bone growth on her jaw. She’s a wonderful “mama” for Gus, our mini donkey

Bubba – a sweet, kind sorrel QH gelding, approximately 25 years old, who belonged to a young boy. He had to give him up due to progressive blindness. Bubba is a great companion to T Bear and Tony Pony Cappy- rescued with her mother, Marena, Cappy was 3 years old and malnourished. Her mother was later adopted and Cappy developed osteomyolitis in a hind leg and had to have surgery. She is now approximately 8 years old, beautiful, part Mustang and QH….and flies like the wind!

Champ and Commodore- Champ – brought to us at 4 months old with a severe infection in lower joint of his right leg. He could walk only on 3 legs. His owner had been advised to put him down by his veterinarian. He loved Champ too much and asked if we could try and help. Many days and weeks of flushing the wound, changing bandages paid off. His wound healed and Champ runs and plays and will be 4 years old this April, 2005. His companions are Claudia and Commodore. Commodore – a beautiful sorrell T-Bred gelding…161/2 hands. He used to be a Hunter-Jumper but became broken down in the back hocks and unable to continue. He was retired by his owners. A sweet, gentle fellow…inside and out! Clyde- Little Clyde, Cupid and Thunder, all ponies, were reported to us by San Antonio Police Department as they were running loose on a main highway in South side San Antonio, along with a large chestnut gelding! The story was that their owner had died, no one claimed them and they probably broke out due to hunger. The big boy was Cody, who had an enormous wound in his right knee which we treated. The other ponies, Thunder and Cupid were adopted later on, as was Cody. He was returned due to: “being a dangerous horse.” You’ll have to come and see how dangerous he is! Clyde is still with us because he is much older. He is companion to little Rusty.

Joe- a sweet burro, retired due to age and also being very lonesome. Joe is right at home with a group of horses and loves it! He is about 30 years old and no longer lonely Pal- scared and frightened, his owner, due to prior mistreatment, brought him to us. He was always stressed and she felt he should live out his retirement here. Pal has a slice through ¾ of his tongue from a cruel bit. He is still a little head shy and stand-offish, but will eat out of your hand now…and “sings” so beautifully for his food….I’ve named him “Pavorotti”. He is a g happy boy in his late 20s, a line-back cream colored dun

TBear- retired here by his owner due to permanent blindness. T Bear needed a smaller, safer area so he is with Bubba and Tony. They are very happy together. T Bear is approximately 30 years young! A very king QH gelding Windy- registered as “Wayward Wind”, a lovely 20+ bay Arabian mare. She was given up by 14 year old owner due to COPD, which caused Windy to cough and become breathless when ridden. She no longer shows any sign of the disease and is living a calm and happy life. A favorite of everyone due to her beauty and sweet nature
